Who's Seeking Who?

ALL CHURCHES SHOULD BE SENSITIVE - BUT WHO IS SEEKING?

Until a few years ago I worked for the largest food service company in the world. Part of my orientation education was to be exposed to, “sensitivity training.” According to the contributors of Wikipedia, Sensitivity Training is a form of training that claims to make people more aware of their own prejudices, and more sensitive to others.

Being sensitive did not originate with our post-modern, politically correct way of life. Its roots can be traced into the 1930’s and 40’s. Then, in the 1990’s sensitivity found its way into the church – and the “Seeker Sensitive” movement was born.
In essence, we in the church concluded that the way to make insiders out of outsiders was to forgo our own spiritual liberty and design our experiences so people could more easily relate to us. I have heard and experienced many, if not all, of the arguments concerning this movement…except this one

…no one is REALLY seeking!  Well, that is not entirely true – let me explain.

“there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God” Romans 3:11 NIV

From the beginning, it is God who has sought man – not the other way around. He has chased us from the time of The Garden and continues to seek us today. He always raised up prophets that would tell of impending doom less we return to Him. Hosea bought his harlot-of-a wife back from slavery - time and time and time again. In the New Testament, Jesus makes the claim that it is He that has chosen us and has called us…”

Who is Seeking Who? It is God who is seeking us.

There is indeed a need for a Seeker Sensitive church. Each and every Sunday experience should be deliberately sensitive to The One who is seeking. When I say sensitive I simply mean to be aware, receptive, and responsive to Him as He seeks to be near us His Bride…The Church.
His desire is for us. His heart is to be with us, teach us all things, and to demonstrate His love, grace, and power toward us.
God seeks to meet us where we are…to heal us…or welcome us home from a prodigal journey. We do no service to those not of “The Way” by demonstrating an atmosphere that is sensitive to them and their needs.
Rather, we best introduce our Lord and Savior, our God and King, by demonstrating our sensitivity to The Spirit of God as He leads us into all truth.

We must loosen the bounds of tradition that calls for an order of service that makes little or no provision for a spontaneous move of God. Is there not a way to spend time in preparation to the one who is seeking as opposed to countless meeting that ultimately leave most everything in our own hands, hearts and minds.

Who is Seeking Who? God is seeking us, by His Spirit. We must now decide who’s sensitivity a we going to concern ourselves with.
